INTL 31107: Research Methods
July 6-August 2 with live online sessions on Mondays and Wednesdays,11:30am-2:25pm EST (*LINK* to Zoom)
Class and Instructor Policies
*This class uses a flipped-classroom model for our Wednesday meetings. Simply put, students are given the readings and some lectures beforehand. They come to class prepared to apply what they learned at home through various in-class assignments, such as presentations, group work, and individual projects.
* To get the most out of this course, students need to be prepared to actively participate in class, even if it is now online, by engaging with the lectures and assignments, listening attentively to others’ contributions, and turning in assignments complete and on time. It is especially important that when we discuss and read about sensitive topics, you keep an open mind, and your comments respectful and on topic. Expressions of prejudice or hate are not tolerated or acceptable.
Active participation and being prepared mean:
- Having completed the assigned readings before class, and having them available and accessible in class. Always bring the texts to refer to them.
- Having relevant questions and thoughtful comments
- Paying attention to others
- Answering instructor questions and completing assignments
- Being ready for your scheduled presentations
*Relatedly, on-time and regular attendance on Mondays and Wednesdays at 11:30am is necessary. Being absent, arriving late, or leaving early can affect your overall grade because it affects your ability to fully understand the material you are being asked to engage with in class.
- If you are absent, please contact a classmate for notes. Please also check the Commons class site and your campus email for any announcements.
*Students with disabilities/accessibility needs of any kind (including learning, physical, and mental) and those who suspect they many have a disability/ an accessibility need, whether permanent or temporary, are encouraged to contact AccessAbility Center/Student Disability Services as early as possible.
*Your success in this class is important to me. I will gladly accommodate any ADA requests. While I work hard to make our class accessible, I understand that you may have access needs that I have not addressed. Access is an ongoing process. Please meet with me to discuss your access needs.
*If you have a documented long-term emergency, illness or situation that affects your ability to attend or participate in class, please contact me as soon as possible so that arrangements can be made. As the instructor, I reserve the right to make any accommodations that are appropriate for the individual student and circumstances.
*Recordings and Photographs: To ensure the free and open discussion of ideas, students may not record classroom lectures, discussion and/or activities without the advance written permission of the instructor, and any such recording properly approved in advance can be used solely for the student’s own private use. Taking photographs/screenshots of others is prohibited.
*Check your campus email regularly for instructor announcements or schedule changes. I can be reached at [email protected] and [email protected]. I will check the accounts in the morning Monday through Friday. I ask that you use your official CUNY email for important communications. Note that I may answer your email as an announcement on the Commons class site or email to all students if the information is important for all students.
Assignments
*Students will come up with their own study plan to help them through the semester and are required to read and view the information on academic dishonesty.
*Each student will be responsible for posting on the Commons class site. When you are asked to find an article for class, you should post the link in the Discussion section.
*Students will be expected to participate in all classes. Participation means they contribute during these classes either verbally or in the chat, contribute to and collaborate on the in-class assignments during breakout sessions, and answer instructor questions. (15 points)
*Students are expected to complete the assigned readings, podcasts, and lectures before class so they can participate in class, understand the lecture and ask questions.
*Students are responsible for one presentation on a UN report. Further instructions will be handed out in class.
* The final project will be a 3-5 page reflection based on the work done in class. Further instructions will be handed out in class.
